The Thirty Hour Famine
They arrived with sleeping bags, pj’s, empty stomachs, and lots of energy! Friday afternoon, February 15th, saw youth from St. Thomas’, Christ Church Anglican and St Andrews Presbyterian-Trenton begin the World Vision 30-Hour Famine.
The Famine is an overnight adventure, a time for young people to come together and learn about the poor of our world, in part by experiencing a small bit of their poverty and hunger. When they arrive, they have already gone for five hours without any solid food. Over the course of our time together, we would only consume juice, water, and one cup of steamed rice. On Saturday evening, as we came to the end of our “famine”, we celebrated with a pot-luck feast. Grace was provided by The Rev.’d Michael Oulton of Christ Church, whose daughter Sarah and son Thomas participated in the event.
The weekend was highlighted with moments of education and discussion. However, it was not all serious! It was also a time to have fun – games, (The Cup Game), a talent show, and even great skits.. We were up late Friday night (some later than others!), sleeping over in The Loft and the basement.
Many thanks to our organizers for a great time – Linda Matchim, Chris Calwell, Riley Calwell, Mark Wickson, Bruce Kerr, Teri Cook and Robert Robert. Support from youth leaders Laura Fry, Ron Kirkpatrick and Rev. Barbara Robinson - Christ Church and Susan Down - St. Andrews helped to make this a weekend to remember.
